Most of the time, students and professionals are required to write a research paper. In school, a research paper reflects the learning and knowledge you gain from your classes. It is therefore important to show to your professors that you learned well and applied your learnings.

But in reality, writing may not be everyone’s favorite. With tons of workloads, writings become one of the stressors. Usually, you tend to double up your effort to make it up to the deadline. Some are spending their whole entire night figuring out how to manage their time and to come up with a good research paper.

In most cases, research needs time and tremendous effort on the part of the researcher. Most students hate the process because it is physically and psychologically painful.

Here are my simple tactics I implement either in school or in my professional research career:

Step 1: Choose the right topic

Developing a good research topic is an important skill. Sometimes professors may assign you a particular topic, but most of the time they require you to pick your own topic of your own interest. When figuring out what kind of research topic to proceed, there are a few things that you always need to consider:

  • Try to brainstorm for some ideas
  • Choose some topic that is easy for you to read and understand
  • Make sure that the topic material is available
  • Make a list of possible keywords
  • Describe your topic as a focal point in the research question
  • Research more about your topic
  • Convey a research statement

Selecting a good topic for research may or may not be easy. It must be accurate enough to be interesting to find sufficient information. Before selecting your desired topic, just make sure that you know what would be the outcome of your final project.

Here are some guidelines that can be used through the process of selecting your research topic.

Brainstorm for ideas

During brainstorming, you can use the following questions to help you generate valid topic ideas.

  • Do you have any opinion or agenda on our current social status or any political controversy that we are facing right now?
  • Have you seen some news recently that has awakened your interest?
  • Do you have any personal issues, problems or concerns that you would like to know?
  • Is there anything you’d like to learn more about?
  • Do you have any interest in the current events of our country, the previous governments or any social sciences related?
  • What about interest in any health or medicine, humanities, arts, literature, and music?

Write down your own ideas that reflect your interest. But look out for overused ideas when you are deciding on a quick research topic. If time is your concern, avoid experimental topics. These topics require cause and effect investigation. In other words, you need to conduct experiments. There is nothing about this research type. In fact, experimental research is more accurate than simple descriptive and correlational studies. The only challenge here is time. Experimental studies would normally take time. If you are not sure, don’t be scared to ask your professor for a piece of advice.

Make a List of Useful Keywords

Keeping the relevant terms in your topic will help you stay focus on the area you want to take. Here’s what you can do:

  • Look for any possible words that can best describe your own topic
  • Search those keywords when you’re reading articles. Try to find general information about your topic.
  • Look for broader and narrower terms, try to search the synonyms or key concepts for the keywords to widen your sources
  • Takedown notes of these words and use it later when searching for references

Formulate a Research Statement

Pick a final topic that you find most coherent. You have to constantly search for more information and connect the dots because some data isn’t given. The most complicated part is picking a topic and getting a piece of in-depth information about your topic.

Step 2: Gather a lot of information about the topic

Read articles or previous studies about the topic you chose. Then look for the recommendations the authors had provided. This will help you design your study fast. Here’s what you can do:

  • Read journal articles on your topic.
  • Scan online articles. Google is rich in all sorts of information you need for your study. You will find blogs that will surely help you broaden your knowledge.

Step 3: Make a Research Statement

The research statement is the foundation of your paper. You want it to be solid and strong. Doing such requires focus. As much as possible make it something you firmly believe so it would be much easier for you rather than something you doubt. It usually reflects an opinion or judgment that an author has made.

What Makes a Strong Research Statement?

A strong research statement requires proof; it isn’t simply an assertion of fact. You have to support your research statement by assisting proof that will interest your readers and inspire them to read the paper.

It is your first draft. It is not perfect. The authors know it. Your concern in this phase is to capture the ideas as they appear.

Writing the first draft can be done with pen and paper (the traditional way) or on a computer screen. However, in my case, I prefer the paper and pen way. I am more effective and seems that my mind works faster when writing using a pen. But of course, this is my own preference. However, scientific studies found that your mind works faster when you write using pen and paper.

In the actual writing process, try to imagine you were talking to a friend convincing him of your own point of view and write down your line of reasoning. Arrange topics in headings and subheadings as applicable to coding and prescribe the formatting of your professor.

Step 5:  Cite your sources as you write

Citing as much as you can help you save so much time in the long run since you have different sources. In that way, it’s much easier for you to find articles that will support your paper.

Your outline will guide you into the specific information you need to find so you don’t have to waste time reading lots of useless materials. Don’t get caught up reading what doesn’t apply to your research. Every time you see something that you think it can help throughout your research, cite it. But be careful not to plagiarize. Plagiarism is a common problem among students. The best way to avoid this is to write the idea of the idea of the way you understand it. Do not copy what is in those published articles. Provide correct citation. Make sure you pay attention to important information such as the article’s title, authors’ name, year of publication, the name of the journal, etc.

Step 6: Revise
